Dovecote Meadow Extra Care Housing, Sunderland,

Dovecote Meadow is the largest Extra Care Housing development within the City of Sunderland, providing 175 two bedroom apartments over three phases of construction.  Phases one and two, which provide 131 apartments along with the main communal facilities were completed in July and are now being occupied by residents.

Set on a sloping site, the main entrance in the centre of the development leads directly into the communal area which is highlighted by a four storey high atrium, providing both natural light and ventilation deep into the building. With direct access to the café area, coffee bar, wellbeing suite, care office, hair salon, shop, resident’s lounge and court manager’s office, the area is expected to become the active hub of the development whilst also enticing the public into the building to use the facilities.  A lift and stairwell lead to phase two of the development whilst a bridge will be provided to link into phase three which is currently under construction.  Particular care has been taken in the design to reduce the mass of what is a very large building by stepping the roof heights, staggering building blocks and making use of the level changes across the site.

Operated by Housing & Care 21, the development provides all two bedroom apartments with a variety of layouts, including a number of larger apartments providing increased wheelchair access for tennants.  All apartments are sized to be wheelchair accessible with accessible shower rooms, buggy parking space etc.  In addition to further general needs apartments, phase three will house a specilist dementia two storey wing providing a total of 20, open plan apartments set around communal kitchen, lounge and dining areas.

The Contractor for the works is Keepmoat Regeneration North East
